Great end to a successful year

The annual NP Tae Kwon Do Academy Christmas Party took place on Friday 9 December at Jokers in Dunfermline.  This was our biggest year yet with students and parents from all of our clubs in attendance.  The night started with a disco and games for our younger students, before going on to the main part of the night when the overalls were presented for this year's UTF Scotland Interclub Competition.  This year NP Tae Kwon Do Academy students on 11 overalls and a full list of winners is detailed below.  Well done to everyone and good luck for next year's competitions!

After the student presentations there was a surprise presentation for Mr Purves to commemorate 21 years training and 10 years of the founding NP Tae Kwon Do Academy club - Bannatynes Adults.  The presentation was made by students from across all of the clubs and left Mr Purves speechless as he had no idea what his senior grades had been planning for the couple months leading up to the Christmas Party.  This party was a great way to end 2011 and celebrate the successes our students have had over the last 12 months.

Black Belt Seminar

Thanks to Master Brown for hosting an excellent blackbelt semianr.  The event was over 2 days for the higher grades with the 1st and 2nd Degrees joining on the Sunday.  The Saturday was not only an intensive refreshment of patterns knowledge but attendees were given a great work out at the same time, leaving them very sore for the next day.  Extra warm up required for them on the Sunday!!

The Sunday started with the 2nd Degrees joining then later in the morning the 1st Degrees joined where the lower graded black belt patterns were covered.  After a break, the afternoon continued with other technical aspects including 2 step, take downs and foot sparring.

UTF Scotland 20th Anniversary Demonstration

On Saturday 10 September Mr Purves and 11 of his students from both the Bannatynes and Pitreavie classes attended a 20th Anniversary demonstration that was arranged to mark 20 years since Master Brown opened his first class at the Mariner Centre in Falkirk.  The students ranged from our youngest rainbow to colour belt and black belt juniors and adults.

The demonstration started with patterns across all of the grades and kicking and punching drills for the younger students.  After some padwork the black belts went on to demonstrate jumping and breaking techniques.  After the demonstration was over, Master Brown received a presentation from the students to mark the 20 years.  This event was arranged without Master Brown's knowledge after the demo he commented that he would remember the day for the rest of his life.  Long serving students, including Mr Purves also received commemorative medals marking at least 15 years training.

August 2011

The third colour belt grading of the year took place on Thursday 25 August at Kelty Community Centre.  Students from all of clubs took part including our newest club at Pitreavie.  As always the standard was high and all of our students passed their grading.

Summer Social Event - 80s Quiz Night

Following a quiet couple of months in the Tae Kwon Do calendar, NP Tae Kwon Do Academy hosted it's first annual summer social event.  This year's theme was an 80s Quiz Night.  The event got of to a great start with a complete sell out of all tickets to students, family and friends.  The quiz night took place at the Wood Mill function room in Dunfermline and had a good mix of students of all ages with both our youngest and oldest student taking part.  There were 9 teams on the night who were tested on their 80s knowledge by our quiz master, Mr George Watters and after 3 rounds there was fierce competition at the top of the leader board.  After 5 rounds it was still close at the top, but our eventual winners 'Two Tribes' came into their own in the final music round scoring 21 out of 22 (you really need to brush up on your NKOTB knowledge!) and clinching the victory.  Well done to everyone who took part and we are looking forward to next year's event.

After an interesting start to the week with crazy weather conditions the Club Gradings took place over 2 nights.  This was another huge grading with a high number of colour belt students taking part.  There has been a huge amount of expansion in our classes over the last few months so thank you to all of the black belts and colour belt adults who helped out and made the gradings run smoothly.

Elite Training

Master Brown's Elite training on 7 May was open to both colour belts and black belts, giving some of our colour belts students the opportunity to train with Master Brown.  In addition to black belts Nik Purves, Andrew Miller and Louise Purves 8 of our colour belts were also in attendance.  Colour belt adults - Erika Anderson, George Watters.  Colour belt Juniors - Kayla Robinson, Caitlin Macalpine, Mya Watters, Georgie Watters, Josh Robinson, Euan Robinson.  The session covered fitness, sparring drills and sparring and was described by one of our juniors as 'awesome!'

March 2011

Black Belt Grading Success

The last weekend in March was a huge landmark for NP Tae Kwon Do Academy, with Chief Instructor Mr Nik Purves grading and passing to 5th degree black belt.  The grading took place over 2 days and definitely put Mr Purves through his paces!!  The weekend started with the national gradings where he was also joined by Bannatynes Junior instructor who was sitting her 2nd Degree level 1.  Mr Purves joined the 4th and 5th degree candidates and began his grading with self defence, modal sparring and set sparring.

Day 2 then started with the red belt seminar, where Mr Purves was joined by black belt students Louise Purves and Paul Gowens.  After a very enjoyable and informative seminar from UTF Scotland president Master Brown it was time for part 2 of the grading.   After a very long a tiring afternoon for all of the grading candidates, Master Brown was pleased to announce that Mr Purves had passed to 5th degree.   Well done to everyone who took part at the weekend and all of the new UTF Scotland black belts.

P.U.M.A World Championships

Mr Purves along with 4 of his Black Belt students (Andrew Miller, Louise Purves, Dougie Chalmers & Lesley Mealing) attended the P.U.M.A World Championships in Swindon as part of the UTF Scotland Squad.  The competition was spread over 2 days and covered, juniors, adults, seniors, team events and special techniques so there was a lot to fit into the weekend.  Day 1 started with the Juniors with UTF Scotland putting on a strong performance with the Juniors taking medals in both patterns and sparring.  Then it was the turn of the adults who started their competition with patterns.  UTF Scotland again did well with Mr Purves winning bronze in the 4th/5th Degree Male Patterns.  Day 1 then finished with the junior teams, seeing the Scotland ladies team winning both a silver and a bronze.

After a nights rest it was back for day 2 which started with the senior patterns and sparring.  Again UTF Scotland did well winning both sparring and patterns medals.  This was closely followed with the male and female adult sparring.  Louise Purves and Lesley Mealing joined the medal winners, both winning bronze in the Ladies fly weight sparring, a section which was dominated by UTF Scotland.    The day ended with the team events.  The ladies team did extremely well with gold in patterns and silver in sparring (including Lesley Mealing on her second appearance on the ladies sparring team), however unfortunately the male team were unable to compete due to injuries.  The event was enjoyed by all and students are all keen to find out when the next competition will be.
